White Sands National Monument
We headed out before the sun was even awake and made the drive from Austin, Texas to the White Sands National Monument in New Mexico.
This ended up being one of our favorite stops during our road trip.
Even though to be honest, as we were getting closer we were starting to get a little skeptical. When you’re driving along this long boring highway the map is saying it’s on your left hand side just beyond but you’re looking and and you don’t see any white sands. Then you pass the entrance and you start to see some but inside your head you’re really wondering if this was all worth it and wishing you didn’t just waste 10 hours.
I was looking down at the pamphlet they give you at the entrance, reading out loud about the plants and lizards and blah blah blah, while Joe is trying to tell me to get the camera. When I finally look up we are literally surrounded by WHITE. For a second I thought we were driving through snow. This place literally took our breaths away.
And Lloyd LOVED it here (just look at his face in the photos). Since we were here in April it was good weather where it wasn’t blistering hot or too cold. We’ve seen photos during dusk with the moon out and clear skies and it looks simply magnificent. We saw people sledding, having bbqs (they have spots with grills and picnic tables) and obviously you can hike and there’s horseback riding too.
Also fun fact: Brad Pitt was here. Personally not a fan (yes Team Jennifer) but pretty neat photos with him at a couple of National Monuments, including the White Sands.
We found a spot without anyone around, took off our shoes, ran around and just marveled at it all. It was a good day.
